Torej, Garudasana izboljšuje držo, koncentracijo, koordinacijo in ravnotežje.

Garuda pravzaprav ni orel, vendar velika mitološka ptica – kralj ptic.

Ponovno se pred njim pojavi Yama in pozdravi Garudo. Garuda pozdravi boga smrti in ga vpraša: “Vam lahko postavim eno vprašanje? Ko ste prišli, ste videli malo ptico in ob pogledu nanjo ste postali zamišljeni. Zakaj?”

Nihče ne more vedeti zagotovo.

English version:

eagle-pose-rightGarudhasana or the Eagle pose is a standing posture which reminds us on the game Twister. We twist and stretch our limbs until we do not know left from right – at the same time we stand on one leg. Finding stability is a challenge.

Despite the feeling of being closed in this posture, this asana helps to open the body as it stretches the area between the shoulder blades and releases the tensions in upper back (in the heart region). Moreover, it stretches the shoulders, ankles, hips and wrists. The Eagle’s superior vision (from the sky) relates to the 3rd eye. The gift of clear vision directly relates to concentration which we develop in yoga. Clear vision is possible when the mind is still and focused. When we practice balancing in asanas such as Garudhasana we fix our eyes onto one spot. In the final position we breath normally, trying to keep the balance. Therefore, Garudhasana improves posture, concentration, coordination and balance.

However, Garuda is not an Eagle. It is a mythological creature: half bird and half man – the King of the Birds. Garuda has golden body of a man, big wings, a beak and a golden crown. He is a carrier of Hindu God Vishnu.

One of Garuda stories: How to cheat Death?

garuda-with-vishnuHigh in Kailasha mountains is the abode of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction. One evening God Vishnu (god responsible for cosmic order) comes to visit. He came on the wings of Garuda. Garuda waited outside while God Vishnu went inside. Garuda was sitting outside observing the nature and its beauty. He laid his eyes on a beautiful small bird, who sat by the entrance of the Shiva abode and said to himself: “How magnificent is the Creation. One who has created these high mountains has also made this tiny bird – and both seem equally beautiful.”

Just then Yama, the God of Death, comes by with intention to meet Shiva. As he passed, his eyes went over to the bird and he raised his brows in a perplexed manner. Then he took his eyes of the bird and went inside. It is said that even a slight glance of Yama can bring death. So, Garuda, who saw Yama’s action told to himself: “Yama looking at the bird means – the bird’s time is up.” His heart was filled with pity for the helpless bird so he decided to save the bird and took the bird miles away into the forest and left it on the rock by the brook. Then he came back to Kailasha and continued to wait for his master. Soon after, Yama returned from inside and Garuda greeted the God and said: “May I put a question to you? While going in, you saw a bird and for a moment you became pensive, why?”

Yama answered: “Well, when my eyes fell on the little bird, I saw that it was to die in a few minutes, swallowed by a python, far away from here in a forest near a brook. I wondered how this tiny creature would traverse the thousand of miles separating it from its destiny in such a short time. Then I forgot. Surely it must have happened somehow.” Saying this, Yama smiled and went away.

Did he know about Garuda’ s specific role in the matter? Nobody can know for sure. Garuda sat perplexed, thinking over the surprising turn of events.
